When researching the best colleges with intelligence degrees to suit your intelligence needs, very few opportunities exist that specialize in counterintelligence training. Why seek out counterintelligence training? Counterintelligence is the sword and shield of the intelligence professional to deter foreign intelligence services from seeking out information within your organization. This discipline provides you with the tool set to infiltrate the foreign organization at the same time. Counterintelligence is unknown to many outside the realm of the Intelligence Community, and is often viewed as the cloak and dagger operations of the government. Though the cloak and dagger approach appeals to many potential professionals, it diverts from the purposes of the intelligence trade.

Counterintelligence training is an evolving subject that grows in understanding from the observations and penetration operations that take place within the intelligence organization, yet the fundamentals will always remain the same. Seeing how a foreign intelligence service attempts to break into the U.S. Embassy that holds our secure homeland intelligence, we open the doorway for counterintelligence to take place. By advanced knowledge of their espionage attempt, we may observe their attack, whether by noticing how they bypassed a code-locked door, determining where in the building was their primary focus, and most importantly the opportunity to feed that foreign agent disinformation and create a new intelligence operation in itself for our benefit. There are possibilities in even creating a double-agent when confronting the foreign agent – the possibilities are virtually endless in counterintelligence.

Throughout history, militaries thwarted imminent attacks on their forces by having conducted in-depth counterintelligence operations. By learning of our weaknesses in defenses and current force protection measures, we can adequately mitigate and deter the espionage threats that foreign intelligence services pose against us. Intelligence services counterintelligence tradecraft used to be withheld from the public and given to the most trustworthy, reliable agents within their service. Now counterintelligence training is available openly through colleges with intelligence degrees for those who seek out the opportunity it yields.

Individuals seeking out colleges with intelligence degrees often overlook the invaluable subject of counterintelligence training when looking for a quality intelligence school. An aspiring student who knows nothing of the intelligence profession often does not realize that this discipline is even of applicability and importance to their educational goals. Preventing subversion, sabotage and assassinations within the organization are all goals of counterintelligence. If an organization cannot provide such protection to their intelligence professionals, they fall victim to foreign intelligence services. Counterintelligence training enables students to distinguish the conceptual differences between the traditional law enforcement approach to counterintelligence, which focuses more specifically on the surveillance of foreign operatives, and the subtler approach focused on ‘turning’ foreign operatives into ‘double agents’ who can then be used covertly to manipulate their host agencies.

By driving home the importance of counterintelligence training when looking for intelligence schools, students may gain an advanced understanding that some intelligence professionals within intelligence services neglect. Foreign intelligence services will never cease their attempts at soliciting and gaining a foot-in-the-door into the U.S. government’s intelligence operations, especially while we are still heavily focused on deterring the terrorist threat worldwide. Exposing those foreign intelligence services is a vital part of the job for many of our intelligence professionals.
