Choosing a Wall, Table Top or Garden Fountain – Some Tips
by
janet ashbyWhen you are considering the purchase of a table top, wall or garden water fountain you will need to check that the one you are considering will fit into the place where it is going and will also look good. Outdoor garden fountains can often be very large and expensive and you need to make sure you buy one that will enhance your garden and be the right size to fit comfortably in it’s location. Here are a few guidelines that we hope will help you to make a decision on the right fountain for your home or garden, whether it is a wall, table top or outdoor floor fountain in order for you can make a wise choice.
Wall Fountains
Wall fountains come in both horizontal and vertical design. These different models are suitable for various locations. A large vertical fountain would would look better in a room with a high ceiling. On a wider wall a vertical fountain can look out of place unless you hang other objects on either side of the fountain. On a long wall that has a lower ceiling a horizontal wall fountain would be more suitable. In a high ceilinged room a horizontal wall fountain can appear much smaller than it really is. You would be advised to think about the depth of the fountain. In a narrow corridor or walkway this could be important though nearly all wall fountains are only about six inches deep so this generally won’t be too much of a problem.
Sizing a Wall Fountain

Find out the dimensions of the wall fountain you are considering buying then measure it out where you are going to place it. Attach post-it notes or thumb tacks at each corner then stand back and look to find out if it looks good. Some people prefer to use sticky tape to make an outline of the fountain to get a better picture of what it will look like when you have hung it in place.
Table Top Fountains
Find out the diameter of your chosen fountain then make certain it will fit where you intend it to go. It’s helpful to set an object of a similar size at this location to ensure that it looks OK. To judge the height you could stack a few books to the same height and see if it looks good. Some of the tabletop fountains vary in height because they are made from natural stones that are not going to be consistent. Take care you make allowances for this when deciding on the fountain to purchase.
Outdoor Garden Water Fountains
The most important consideration is probably the width when choosing an outdoor floor fountain. If you are intending to put the fountain on a patio or under an arbour or other construction you will have to consider as well how high the fountain is. You might want to heap boxes in the chosen location to ensure that it will fit comfortably and that it will look good.
Fountain Water Sources
Garden fountains usually use water that is recirculated and which should be replaced as it is lost by splashing and evaporation. A water pump circulates the water all the way through the fountain. The majority of residential and office fountains are of a recirculation type. A basin holds the water and recirculating fountains can be located anywhere a source of electricity is present. recirculating fountains must be kept an eye on and the reservoir topped up or the pump may be damaged
Recirculating Fountains
How often you will have to refill the reservoir depends on the humidity of the air where you have the fountain. A fountain in a heated home in the winter will require refilling quite often, preferably with small amounts of water more frequently, instead of allowing the reservoir to nearly dry out before you add water. For those of us with house plants simply top up the fountain each time you water them.
